These
excerpts are taken from the soundtrack of a short film project based on the
correspondence of Bettine von Arnim and Karoline Gunderode.
'Correspondence'
deals with notions of invented space. Inspired by the fiction created around
the two writers in 'No Place On Earth', by Christa Wolfe. Conversations, poetry,
dairies, essays, and activity of the salons during the German Romantic period
and the letters of Bettine and Karoline represent a channel through which
ideas are able to permeate an otherwise predominantly male oriented literary
and political circles.
These
aspirations influence following generations and extend themselves into a literary
space unconfined by geographical, physical boundaries. To translate this for
the film, the emphasis was on working with scenes which are non-descript in
their location.
The sound
and narration in this piece explores the exchange between Alam and Kirschner
and is used to address travel, distance, and notions of an exotic, foriegn
space.
